Kinja'd!!!

Should I continue my exploration of new car sales stats in different bits of Europe? Oh yes, why not!

Next up: Norway. Land of fjords, endless road detours around said fjords, ferries over said fjords and endless tunnels through endless mountains between said fjords. And monies. Lots and lots of monies.

We’ve found that Ireland and Sweden like VWs and don’t do Hondas. We’ve also found that the Swedes really go for Volvos.

So, how about the Norwegians? What’s hot and what’s not in the fjords?

Sadly, I can’t find what they don’t buy, only the top 20 models !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

They do things differently in Norway. Their best seller is the Golf which is to be expected. Next is...the Tesla Model S. Why on earth? Because there are extensive incentives to buy an electric vehicle and the Norwegians - or enough of them - have loads of monies.

So, their best seller is the Golf, which is available powered by electrons, then the Tesla, and down at no. 5 comes the Leaf, also of course electric only. You need to go down to no. 15 to find a car made by the former colonial power Volvo.

Overall 23.4% of new cars sold in March were “nullutslipp personbiler” which my total lack of Norwegian leads me to guess means were zero emission private cars. All of these were elbiler , electric cars. Another 9.5% were hybrids of which about a quarter could be plugged in, a situation which leads the Mitsubishi Outlander - available as a PHEV - to a market share of 1.9% for Q1.

So there you have it. The Norwegians are keener on proceeding by electrons than anyone else.

I like the irony of Teslas being so popular in oil dependent Norway.

Yes, they use the income from oil and gas to pay for their CO2 friendly policies. Interesting.
